When one is diagnosed with breast cancer,
doctors always indicate the breast cancer
stage. This is important because it gives
the patient an idea of the extent that the
cancer cells have spread. What we know of
the stages is, the bigger the number, the
more difficult it is to treat. But the
main purpose why the patient is told of
the cancer stage is for her to have an
idea of the chances of survival as well as
the available treatments that she can
have. Here are the stages of breast
cancer.
Stage
0
This
stage describes breast cancer of the
non-invasive type. Lobular carcinoma in
situ and ductal carcinoma in situ are
examples of Stage 0 cancer. This means
that the cancer cells are contained within
the walls of the point of origin and has
not spread to the tissues in the
breast.
Stage
I
In
this stage, tumor is at most 2 centimeters
long. Cancer is of the invasive type,
meaning it has invaded the tissues around
the walls of the lobule or duct, but it
hasn't spread to the lymph nodes or other
parts of the body. Thus, while the tumor
has spread beyond the point of origin, it
has not travelled far. Women having this
stage have a 98% chance to survive in 5
years.

Stage II
In
this stage, tumor is between 2-5
centimeters in size. It may or may not
have moved to the axillary lymph nodes. It
is further classified as
follows:
-
Stage IIA - The tumor may be longer than 5
centimeters, but it has not moved to
axillary lymph nodes, or the lymph nodes
of the underarm.
-
Stage IIB - The tumor may be less than 2
centimeters, but it has invaded at least
one but not more than four of the axillary
lymph nodes.
Women
with Stage II breast cancer have a 76 to
88% 5-year survival rate, which may be
higher at present because of medical
discoveries and new treatment
available.
