Stage III
This
stage, which is also called locally
advanced cancer, describes cancer that has
spread to the lymph nodes near the breast,
whether under the arm or near the
collarbone, but not to the more distant
parts of the body. It is further
subdivided into two groups:
-
Stage IIIA - Tumor is longer than 5
centimeters, or it has invaded more lymph
nodes. The lymph nodes do not grow into
one another, and they form clusters or
stick to each other.
-
Stage IIIB - Tumor, regardless of size,
has moved to the breast skin. It may have
also invaded the chest wall or the
internal mammary lymph nodes. These are
the nodes found right under the breast and
in the chest. Inflammatory breast cancer
is classified under this stage. A rare but
aggressive type, cancer cells have moved
to the breast skin, causing warm redness
and swelling, or some ridges or puffiness
of the skin.
Women
with Stage II breast cancer have at least
a 49 to 56% 5-year survival rate, or
higher.
Stage
IV
This
stage describes cancer in its most
advanced form. Cancer has moved beyond the
breast area and internal mammary lymph
nodes. It has invaded the distant parts or
organs of the body such as supraclavicular
lymph nodes, bones, lungs, liver or brain.
This is also called metastatic breast
cancer. Treatment is focused on symptoms
relief and in shrinking but not completely
curing the cancer.
Some
describe cancer stages as early, later and
advanced. Early stage includes Stages
0-IIA, later stage includes Stages IIB and
Stage III, and advanced stage is Stage
IV.
