As women get older, the risk of breast cancer increases. That is why regular breast exams are necessary especially for menopausal women. There are many known risk factors, some true while most of them are not. For example, there has been no clinical evidence that underwire bras, breast implants and anti-perspirants cause breast cancer. Among the true risk factors are obesity, alcohol, radiation, family history of breast cancer, and hormone replacement therapy for menopausal women. Cancer researchers continue to conduct tests to verify. Read more information on these risk factors and how they may be applicable to you.

There are four stages of breast cancer. The stage determines the size as well as the extent of the tumor. For example, Stage I breast cancer means that the tumor has remained in the walls of the duct or lobule where it started. On the other hand, Stage IV breast cancer has moved from the breast and affected distant parts of the body such as the lung or bone. The stage also determines the survival rate as well as the most effective treatment.

Innovations in the medical field have resulted in more treatment types available today. One of them is surgery, which can be mastectomy or lumpectomy. Mastectomy involves the surgical removal of the entire breast. Lumpectomy involves removal of the infected part only. After surgery, radiation follows, if necessary. Other modes of treatment are hormonal therapy and chemotherapy. Before choosing a treatment plan, know your options well.
