Chemotherapy
In
chemotherapy, medicine that hinders the
ability of the cancer cells to divide and
reproduce is applied. In effect, the cells
cannot divide rapidly, thus preventing the
cancer from spreading. But because this is
a systemic type of treatment, cancer cells
are not the only ones affected by the
medicine. That is why it is normal that
one would experience side effects such as
nausea and hair loss, because the cells in
these organs are affected as
well.
Different
women have different treatment plans. The
regimen is based on what we call breast
cancer factors such as tumor size, lymph
node involvement, and others. Doctors may
recommend a series of chemotherapies
depending on these factors.
Other
treatments such as immune therapy and
anti-angiogenesis therapies, while
currently not widely available, are still
being studied on. At present, an immune
therapy called Herceptin is available. But
this treatment is only for advanced breast
cancer cases, and with an overactive
HER2/neu cancer gene. In a few years, with
more research, vaccines and immunity
treatments may become
available.
Complementary
Medicine
Patients
must be treated in all aspects -
physically, emotionally, and mentally.
While conventional medicine provides for
the physical treatment, the goal of these
complementary techniques is to treat the
patient mentally and emotionally, and for
some cases, spiritually. Complementary
medicine, while it may not be considered
as treatment per se, helps relieve the
patients from symptoms and painful side
effects.

Among the many complementary techniques
are acupuncture, aromatherapy, shiatsu and
music therapy. Other treatments which help
the patient mentally and spiritually are
hypnosis, meditation and yoga. Joining
support groups can also be therapeutic.
There are many other techniques, which may
or may not have been analyzed on breast
cancer patients in particular. But before
one chooses to undertake any of these
techniques, always consult a
doctor.
In
choosing the breast cancer treatment, know
the stage of breast cancer and its
available options. It is best that before
undergoing anything, the patient and her
family, together with her doctor, must
discuss and weigh the options in order to
come up with most suitable treatment plan.
After all, the fight against breast cancer
is not an individual battle. With the
proper treatment and post-treatment care,
the battle against cancer can actually be
won.
