As an added innovation to digital imaging,
tests are currently being conducted for
the new screening technique called
tomosynthesis. Aside from digital imaging,
a three-dimensional image of the breast
can now be generated. This will allow
doctors to see tumors that might develop
in between the tissue layers. This will
improve detection and reduce false
positives at the same time.
Another
technological advancement is called
positron emission mammography. The body
will be injected with radioactive tracer
dye in minimal amount to facilitate the
PEM scan and improve the breast
image.
A
screening procedure that was once
considered important but is not developed
anymore is ductal lavage. It involves the
analysis of cells in the milk ducts after
it is flushed with fluids. Testing made on
the procedure showed its inability to
detect false positives.
Attention
is focused on breast ultrasound. After
some tests, it showed its ability to
detect breast cysts, so a biopsy to check
if the lump is malignant would no longer
be necessary.
Recent
news featured a link between the age when
one attains his maximum height and breast
cancer risk. Research shows that women who
reached maximum height at a younger age
had a higher breast cancer risk than those
who reached maximum height at an older
age. Researchers are still conducting more
tests with respect to this
development.
